The Schussler-Stewart House formally known as the Dr. Charles H. Schussler House was built circa 1849. The house served as both Dr. Schussler’s home and medical practice which was located in the basement of the home. Dr. Schussler helped found the first hospital in Madison and was well respected in the community. The home is reflective of the local architecture of the time and relied on the skills of local builders who included Greek revival details in the construction of the home. The home includes 12 foot ceilings on both levels and each room has a fireplace common of homes built during this time. The current owner purchased the home in April 2017 and recently completed the home’s interior and exterior rehabilitation. The home is decorated in period antiques representing many styles that would be typically seen in the mid-1800s and early 1900s. You will also find a large collection of antique oil paintings throughout the home. The pride of Mr. Stewart’s collection is a painting by Italian Neoclassical Sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822) famous for marble sculptures. He was also known for his painting skills. The theme for the Schussler-Stewart House holiday décor this year is “Glitz and Grandeur.” Enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday as you visit this home.
