This site is located across the Ohio River / Milton-Madison Bridge, just in KY on Route 36, approximately 5 minutes from downtown Madison.
HISTORY
Richwood on the River was built circa 1803 and was part of a 3000 acre property. Originally slaveowners, the Fearn family became active abolitionists and were part of the Underground Railroad. Those enslaved were hidden in the basement of the home and then taken by tunnel to the Ohio River and rowed across.
RENOVATIONS:
The rear Gathering Room is part of original home and the Italianate front portion was built in 1857. In 2001, Richwood was in danger of being torn down and was purchased by Bill and Susan Hysinger, renovated and opened in 2003 as an inn. Colleen and Ward Sutton became the newest owners and operators in 2015.
SPECIAL FEATURES
•President William McKinley once stayed here
•The property was home to the Richwood Plantation Riding School for Young Women for 20 years in the mid- 1900’S where girls would stay for the summer with their horses.
•Fans of classic TV would be amused to know that TV’s talking horse, Mr. Ed, spent time here with his owner.
