This cozy cottage is the retirement home of Charlie and Lisa Ferguson. The Ferguson’s recently moved to the area, from Boone County, Ky., but Lisa has strong family ties to Madison. Her mother lived right down the street as a child, so Second St. has a special place in her heart. She lovingly named the cottage “Hope Cottage” as a tribute to her mother, Hope Klopp. The home is circa 1880 and features a main door which has a wide decorative surround with a cornice, bulls eyes and diamond patterns. The adjacent window trim mirrors the door.
The gable is of medium height with scrolled brackets at the eaves. Decorative quatrefoils in the gable and a pierced attic vent cover, complete the front façade of this tiny charmer. Sanborn maps produced in the 19th and 20th centuries show no home on the lot in 1854, interestingly the 1887 map depicts the home as two-story. The 1911 map illustrates the home as a classic shotgun, much as it appears today.
There is no parking for this site on Second St. Please park on either Clay St. or Baltimore St.
