HISTORY
This Arts and Crafts Four-Square home was completed in 1907 for Robert Stanton and his wife. The Four-Square design is four rooms over four rooms with spacious hallways. Bill and Susan Ohlendorf purchased the home in 1988 and have been on a journey renovating some of the rooms while restoring others. Stained-glass windows in the dining room and on the staircase landing are original and are characteristic of Craftsman homes. There are quarter-sawn oak floors and woodwork throughout.
RENOVATIONS
Bill has refinished the woodwork in the rooms. The original clay tile roof was damaged in the hailstorm of 2018 and was completely replaced in 2020 by a roofing company from Texas that specializes in historic preservation. The replacement tiles were made by the same manufacturer (Ludowici) as were the original. The primary bath was added 5 years ago in an unused sitting area off the bedroom, and the kitchen was remodeled at the same time.
SPECIAL FEATURES
•The beautiful 3-piece desk was handmade by Susan’s great-great-grandfather and likely with this carpenter’s plane bearing his name, J.J. Hooker, stamped on the end.
•Susan’s mother created numerous pieces of artwork, including exquisite needlework and quilts found throughout the home.
•The coat rack in the laundry room came from a Lydia Middleton Elementary School cloak room where Susan taught her entire career. The scale, enamel wash tub, and clothes pin dresses are old family pieces as are the spools of thread in the lamp.
