History

Emilie Todd Helm (half-sister of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln) or, as the President called her, “Little Sis”, moved to this house in 1866.  Mrs. Helm moved to Madison from Elizabethtown, Kentucky after her husband, a Confederate General, was killed at the Battle of Chickamaugua.  She lived here several years, teaching piano and playing the organ at Christ Episcopal Church.  Her life epitomized the Civil War:  on one side her husband, a fallen Confederate General, on the other side the President of the United States.
